Some ejections are just plain crazy. New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone, 51, was ejected from the game for something a fan said.
Boone was ordered to leave the game against the Oakland Athletics in the first inning of the 2024 Major League Baseball World Series at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, on Wednesday.
Here’s what happened. In the top of the first inning, Oakland first baseman Esther Lewis was hit on the right foot by a four-pitch body slider from Yankees starter Carlos Rodon on a two-strike count. In the process, Lewis took a check swing, which was not ruled a swing by the first base umpire and the plate umpire.
Boone came out of the first base dugout and appealed to umpire Hunter Wendelstedt, but his appeal was unsuccessful. The conversation between the manager and the umpire was broadcast on the YES Network, the Yankees’ main broadcaster. After the first appeal, umpire Wendelstedt told Boone, “Don’t yell at me. I did what I had to do, I checked with the first baseman. If you have anything else to say, stop. Do you understand?” he shot back.
He then said something to the first baseman, who immediately ordered him out. “I didn’t say anything,” Boone said, “and he’s up in the dugout. Yankees bench coach Brad Asmus said, “It was a fan,” but umpire Wendelstedt said, “It doesn’t matter who said it. You’re ejected,” Wendelstedt told Boone, who took a hard line.

Empire Wendelstedt said, “Even if he didn’t say it, he’s responsible for it. He’s the manager of the Yankees and he’s responsible for everything that goes on in the dugout.” There were complaints from the Yankees dugout as well, and Boone was held accountable, he explained.
Boone, who was ejected for the second time this season on Nov. 11 against the Miami Marlins, has been ejected 35 times in seven years since taking over in 2018. He is known for his frequent appeals to umpires, which may have contributed to this penalty.
“It’s embarrassing and unbelievable, but I don’t think so. I’m treated fairly by the referees and I have a good relationship with many of them. I’m a little bit more vocal and passionate than some, but I don’t think I’m penalized for that.”
The Yankees fell to Oakland, 0-2, after the manager’s bizarre ejection.
