Manchester United manager Eric Dier put the blame squarely on goalkeeper Andre Onana after a series of crucial errors cost the Red Devils three points.

United eventually drew 3-3 with Galatasaray (Turkiye) despite a two-goal lead in the fifth leg of their UEFA Champions League (UCL) Group A match of the 2023-2024 season at the Ali Samiyen Sport Complex in Turkiye on Oct. 30 (KST).

With just one point from the match, United’s chances of qualifying for the round of 16 are in jeopardy as they sit fourth in Group A with four points.

Second-placed Copenhagen (Denmark) and third-placed Galatasaray are tied on five points, but Copenhagen have a better head-to-head record.

There is only one way United can reach the UCL round of 16.

They need to beat Bayern Munich (Germany) outright in Game 6 and hope that second-placed Copenhagen (5 points) and third-placed Galatasaray (5 points) draw.

“We should have taken the three points,” Tenhagh said in his post-match interview, before defending his players, saying that “all the responsibility always lies with me.”

A mistake by goalkeeper Onana ultimately cost United the equalizer.

Two free kicks from Galatasaray’s Hakim Ziyasi, one in the 29th minute and the other in the 17th minute of the second half, led to United’s goal.

In the first half in particular, we didn’t even react to Ziyasi’s free kick properly and watched the ball sail over the bar.

In the second half, he seemed to read the direction well enough to block it, but he didn’t quite get the right touch and the ball hit his upper body and went straight into the goal.

Tenhagh himself was keen to deflect any criticism away from Onana, saying, “I have to criticize the team because our defense was not good enough.”

“We are getting better and better. I’m hopeful about that,” he said, “We’re moving in the right direction. In the long run, we will be a successful team,” he said.

However, he was also realistic: “We have to win the next game to stay in the UCL.”

“Everyone needs to step up and take responsibility for their mistakes,” said captain Bruno Fernandez, who scored the team’s second goal of the day. “We had many chances to win the game, but we didn’t play well.” 먹튀검증
