Kansas Lottery Still Optimistic About Casinos

Of the four casinos scheduled to be built in Kansas, only one is currently under construction. Butler National Services says it plans to begin construction of a new casino facility in Ford County soon and hopes to prepare the $87.5 million casino to open by the end of 2009. Plans for three casinos in neighboring counties were all scuttled as successful bidders withdrew.

The latest company to pull out was Kansas Entertainment, which planned a $700 million resort casino at Kansas Speedway in Wyandotte County. The company cited the deteriorating economy and a credit market crunch. They said they would re-apply with a less ambitious plan.

Penn National Gaming previously withdrew its bid due to competition with an Indian casino near its Cherokee County location, while Harrus Entertainment last month withdrew plans for a $535 million project. Penn said he could reapply and there would be other bidders.
