Sanchez joined Birch Smith as a substitute for Burch Smith on April 20 with an annual salary of $400,000 (about 500 million won), and played 126 innings in 24 games, recording a remarkable 7-8 record with an ERA of 3.79. He also led the Eagles’ upward trend with five wins and no losses in his first nine games with a 1.48 ERA.

Hanwha explained the background of the renewal, saying, “In particular, while striking out 99, he only gave up 28 walks, and showed off his stable control, with the strikeout/walk ratio ranking eighth in the league (3.54) among pitchers who pitched more than 100 innings.”

After renewing his contract, Sanchez said, “I’m happy to continue my relationship with the Hanwha Eagles. I’m already excited to meet Eagles fans in Daejeon again,” adding, “I’ll take advantage of my strengths that I’ve shown throughout this season and make up for my shortcomings to show a better performance next season.”

Prior to this, Hanwha recruited new foreign hitter Jonathan Peraza (25) for a total of 1 million dollars (about 1.2 billion won), including a down payment of 200,000 dollars, an annual salary of 600,000 dollars, and an option of 200,000 dollars on Nov. 19.

Born in 1998, Ferraza from Venezuela is a corner outfielder and a right-handed switch heater. “He is a mid- to long-distance hitter who produces strong batting based on his fast bat speed and a small but sturdy body measuring 175 cm to 88 kg. We expect him to revitalize the young team’s atmosphere with his passionate play style,” Hanwha said.

And on Tuesday, he renewed his contract with Felix Peña, a 33-year-old foreign pitcher. The terms of his contract are up to $1.05 million, including a down payment of 200,000 dollars, an annual salary of 650,000 dollars, and incentives of 200,000 dollars. Peña will play in the KBO League for the third year as a member of the Hanwha Eagles. With Sanchez and Peña re-signing, and the recruitment of a new foreign hitter, Peña, the Hanwha Eagles will complete the formation of foreign players for the 2024 season.
