Wolverhampton Wanderers announced on its official website on August 24 that “Wolverhampton Academy will participate in the K League International Youth Cup Incheon 2023, a U-17 tournament to be held in Korea next month.”

The event is the first visit to Korea in Wolverhampton’s 146 years of history. Earlier, Wolverhampton was scheduled to visit South Korea in the pre-season last summer, but canceled the schedule as the friendly match failed. Through the K League International Youth Cup, youth teams will be able to visit Korea and meet Korean soccer fans.

The K League International Youth Cup will be held from September 3 to 9, with 5 K League U18 teams (Seoul, Suwon, Incheon, Jeonbuk, Pohang), Bupyeong High School, 4 European teams (Wolverhampton, Anderrecht, Valencia, Real Sociedad), and 2 Asian teams (Chonburi, Tokyo Verdi).

Russell Jones, head of Wolverhampton’s marketing department, said, “I am happy to confirm my participation in the competition after my trip to Korea was canceled last summer,” adding, “I was very disappointed that I could not visit the pre-season tour in July.” But we have been offered another fantastic opportunity for promising players to compete in Asia,” he said.

“It will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for players and coaches to experience different countries and cultures,” Academy Manager John Hunter-Barrett said.
